Weekend Getaway to Amritsar

This post is all about our two day trip to Amritsar from Delhi. Me and my husband went on this trip in Nov’17.

Cost of Trip
Train: 2600Rs (Round Trip For 2 pax from Delhi to Amritsar)
Hotel: 700Rs (Booked on MMT)
Food & Sight-seeing : 2000Rs

Total: 5,500Rs

 Trip in Detail:
We took the Delhi Pathankot express to Amritsar at around 8.30am on a Saturday Morning. We reached Amritsar at 3.30pm. From the station we took an auto-rickshaw to the Wagah border. (There are shared cabs/autos available from the railway station, but due to paucity of time, we reserved one. Shared autos charge 100 per person for two way. Reserved auto charges 500 for two way)

Wagah Border is famous for the Change of Guards Ceremony starting from 4pm in the Winters and 4.30pm in Summers. The entire ceremony lasts for around 40-50 minutes. We reached at around 4.30pm. We quickly went in post the security check, and caught a few glimpses of the ceremony.

On our way back, we gorged on all the street food lined up, and headed to our hotel on the Grand Trunk Road. We freshened up and started for Harmandir Saheb or Golden Temple as it is commonly called. We started at around 8pm, and reached the temple lane on a cycle rickshaw. We went inside the temple premises, finished our darshan and had a sumptuous dinner in the Langar!! The temple complex is sparking clean, and people are very helpful. I developed a new found respect for Sikhs, after visiting this temple.

We returned back at 12 and retired for the night. The next day morning, we freshened up, checked out of the hotel and headed to Govind Garh Fort. (Ola Cabs are available in Amritsar). One can also get normal autos on the road for a very nominal fare, too.

After Govind Garh, we wanted to explore the food joints in Amritsar. We had lunch at Kakke da Dhaba. We had sumptuous Keema Kaleji and Nalli Nihari, with Butter Naan. 

For dessert, we quickly headed to Gurdas Ram Sweet Corner near the Golden Temple and had piping hot Jalebis!

We quickly headed back to Amritsar Railway Station to take the Shan-e-Punjab express back to Delhi.
That was our short sojourn to Amritsar over the weekend! I would suggest a 3 day trip, instead of our condensed 2 day trip, solely to explore the food! We missed out exploring Pal Dhaba, Beera Chicken, and many other such joints.

2 Day Trip to Kandy & Nuwara Eliya - Sri Lanka

Kandy is a major town located in central Sri Lanka. It is famous for the Tooth Relic Temple and Perendeniya Botanical Garden. We arrived in Kandy from Dambulla by a bus. We reached at around 12 noon. We checked into a hotel booked on the spot through booking.com We freshened up and went to the Tooth Temple on road. It was a 10 minutes walk from the hotel. The Tooth Temple is a very sacred temple for Buddhists, which is believed to house an ancient tooth relic of Lord Buddha. This is housed inside the royal palace and the lake complex. There is an entry ticket for foreign tourists. The Royal Palace and temple complex On the Temple grounds! We did not visit Perendeniya Botanical Garden, since it was in the outskirts, and we strolled around the central railway station area. There were lot of food joints and bakeries in Kandy!
